Our story is not really scary at all.

Getting back to basics. Honoring tradition. Energizing something nostalgic. These are all phrases that describe when you walk to pick up dinner instead of ordering delivery.

Established in 2023, Maggie’s Scary Story Contest was started by Maggie Olmsted, a Brooklyn-based writer and comedian.

Finding traditional stand-up shows somewhat tiresome and not very scary at all (outside of Manhattan comedy clubs — ha!), Maggie set out to create a new live entertainment offering for the Halloween season.

Drawing on her community in Brooklyn comedy and wider network of NYC writers, Maggie put together the first contest in her own backyard. Now in its third year, the contest has only grown.

Former contributing writers include many highly successful individuals. All of their success can likely be attributed to involvement with this contest.
